It's Mrs Roger you need to discuss it with in no uncertain terms !
    :)

She says she didn't press 3, and BT tends to support her as they don't show any connected calls at the time (but see below).

A bit more detail. The 1471 calls were made in quick succession on the same date:
    08:09 1471 fee £0.300
    08:09 1471 fee £0.300
    08:11 1471 fee £0.300

Other calls, all to the same 020- number on the same day:
    08:12 32 seconds £0.360
    08:29 12 seconds £0.360
    08:34 45 seconds £0.360

Possibly one of these could have been activated by pressing 3, but at least two of them not. It seems BT charge for dialled calls that don't connect - is this true?

We rarely make calls from our BT line (just at weekends when 'free') and these details show why. :D We normally call indirect using 18185 (OK, that's using the BT line) or mobiles. Those calls would have cost 3p-5p each instead of 36p using these. And at least mobiles show numbers of incoming callers.

If these were calls to companies then the call could have been answered by a call centre or automated system or something like that. Just because you hear a ringing tone doesn't necessarily mean there has no answer, indeed sometimes companies play their messages, holding music and then put you through to somebody after a ringing tone.

And this is why I don't make any landline calls either. I'm on Three 321 for the mobile, calls cost me 3p a minute. Plusnet, my provider, charge 22p just to set the call up.
