This Thursday, 1st November when you list an item on eBay.co.uk in an eligible category using the Auction-style, Auction-with-Buy It Now or Buy-It-Now Only (Fixed Price) formats, and offer PayPal as a payment option you will pay a half-price Insertion Fee on every item you list.

Okay I hope this isn't a silly question but is the discount something like 7p bearing in mind the listing fee is 15p for a 0.99p start item? In this case it doesn't sound like much.

Or have I got it wrong?

the discount will vary depending on the start price or buy it now price of the auction

for example a buy it now listing for an item costing £30.00-£99.99 with a gallery photo usually costs £1.65 to list (£1.50 insertion fee and 15p gallery fee) but with a half price insertion fee it will be reduced to a 75p insertion fee plus the 15p gallery fee so a total of 90p instead of £1.65 is a saving of 75p.

savings will obviously be higher than this on items with higher starting prices and higher buy it now prices and will be lower on cheaper items

Warning: Before listing it's worth knowing about a sneaky new rule ebay are phasing in. Over the year, they have been limiting visibility across borders. So listing in some categories on ebay.co.uk means your item wont appear on ebay.com and vice versa.

Now, they have rolled this out across ALL items listed on a promotional day. 10am the day before to 10am the day after.

This effectively means that list in a promo period and only UK bidders will see it. Any saving in listing fees are vastly offset by loss of potential bidders from overseas, and a possibly lower end price.

This wont effect everyone, but if you're selling a collectible or something likely to appeal overseas, it may be worth ignoring the 'special offer' days.

I wish Google would hurry up and launch an auction site, I'm sick of being held hostage by the dirty tricks of ebay/paypal.

The vast number of additional listings hitting the UK site is more than enough to depress selling prices across the board, without losing exposure to overseas bidders.

An interesting point has been raised elsewhere on this matter - Can ebay legally justify it as a half price sale, if the reduced product offered is different to the original item? i.e. 15p bought you limited international exposure and full national cover, but the 7p product only buys you national coverage?

It's also worth remembering that US sellers are enjoying a 33% discount on insertion fees for a 3 week period, and it is not affecting their exposure. In fact, the US items are even being displayed on the UK site when the sellers are not offering to post to the UK.

What's all this "level playing field" pony I keep hearing about?!!

ooh, didn't know about the 33% discount on ebay.com, will go list there instead. Generally the only thing i list in promo periods are buy-it nows, so set the price myself. 10p listing days are a good chance to 'test' a higher price without paying for the privilege. Obv only works on rarer items.

Legally, i think you're right. The product/service is materially different, so can't be called half price. ASA/OFT anyone?

The services available on the various ebays do vary though..for instance on ebay.com you pay extra for a 10 day listing, whereas on ebay.co.uk it is the same as a 7 day listing. I can't see that having local differences could breach any international laws..if that were the case then we wouldn't have to bring goods in from overseas to save money (duty and tax etc) as everything would be equal.

As for half price sales..yes, that does seem a bit sneaky!
