I still don't quite understand how this fraud works. Surely the attacker must already have gained access to the target's online banking before having access to their mobile phone number becomes useful? Or is there a method of resetting TSB login credentials that relies solely on access to a mobile phone number for authentication?

Decent explanation in last weekend's Sunday Times Money section

    That was in 1986 !!!!!!!!!
I'm a bit amazed my comment wasn't picked up as sarcasm, but I wasn't referring to what you thought I was, I was referring to the creation of the universe.

A more sophisticated way of relieving people of their cash is so-called SIM swapping, where scammers with access to a TSB customer's account and personal details ask that person's mobile provider to switch their number from one SIM to another, thereby granting the scammer access to any 2FA codes sent via SMS.

Fraudsters use this kind of scam when they already have access to your online banking, but can't transfer any money out of the account.

This whole debacle was entirely due to the EU commission ordering LloydsTSB to split off TSB into a standalone entity which allowed a bank in Spain called Sabadell to chance its luck to enter the UK market on the cheap.
The blame should be placed totally on the EU.
Brexiteer attempt #7,843 at finding a reason for leaving the EU.

Well if you have had the "delights" of dealing with the EU over xx years working in UK exporting industry and finding how they seemingly tried to obstruct us in every way possible you too would be rather anti-them.
We concluded it was deliberate and made representation though Government about the playing field was anything but flat.
I can remember going to an interview with a headhunter and he sighed as he said everyone of us was recounted the same stories of the EU obstructing our industry that it was a real eye-opener for him.
So do you wonder why I hate the EU?
The next lunatic proposed directive they have come up with - All propelled vehicles used for transporting a person must be insured at all times even if only used on private property - so that means for example all ride on grass mowers must be insured plus mobility scooters and it will put an end to uninsured cars on SORN. This apparently was arising out of an single accident in Slovenia on a Farm....

Sounds like a cut-and-paste from the Daily Mail or the like - for anyone interested in the facts rather than hysterical tabloid nonsense, it would be informative to read the UK Government's consultation document, in which it's clear that there are four EU-proposed ways of addressing the issue (of injuries caused by uninsured vehicles) and that the preferred UK option is to require insurance only for using vehicles in traffic, which hardly seems unreasonable to me....

However, I'd suggest that if you want to persist with uninformed EU-bashing, then there are probably more appropriate places to do so than this thread, which is intended to be about TSB's appearance before the Treasury select committee, so would recommend taking it to one of the other boards on here more suited to those wishing to bump their gums in that manner, such as the 'discussion time' board.

Personally, I blame the Big Bang for TSB's problems. It allowed this to happen, so is entirely at fault here.

Rubbish, the seeds of this failure go back to the Siege of Mafeking :D
