    It wasn’t a deposit for the car. The car is only mine when I put in the order form, and fully paid when I picked it up.

    Between the two threads it seems you have handed over £500 as some sort of goodwill gesture. You say it isn't a deposit or forms part of an order for a vehicle.

    If it's purely because you like how the salesman smiles (which it appears to be) then it's his to keep.
