When I had noticed the mirror I thought it was to see people/que behind you while you were useing the atm machine

I looked and could not see anything behind me, if there was a que, I would of had to move to the side, away from the Atm

which would defiy the whole point of the mirror being there.

Well I phoned the bank and asked them was this normal and I was told
    'It Doesnt seem normal,
He wasnt aware of this on any Atm machines.

He took the area etc and said he was going to report it.

The funny thing is, later that day after I had reported it, the Atm machine was Still in use !!!

    Got my card cancled !!

I think i understand what acid is saying:

If the mirror is built in, it is so that you are able to see behind you, maybe to see if someone is watching you?

It the mirror is not built in, there will be a a camera behind it, i guess to read your pin?

Sorry if i havnt understood correctly!!
Well this is what I thought, but wouldnt the mirror be above so it would reflect the no you were to type in???

To be honest with you, Regardless as to why the mirror was there, It was unprofessionally dealt with........
    And
If the mirror was there for the banks own purpose, Once I had reported it, I should of been made aware the reason for this mirror.

I wonder if it is still in use????

On all the cash machines I use theres a screen reminding you to check for anything suspicious attached to the machine before you use it. If there is inform the bank who owns it.

Even if this mirror doesn't allow you to see behind you, would it enable someone stood behind/in the queue to see you keying your PIN? It could be you're pick pocketed later on for your cards so no need for a card reader. If this was the case, the mirror could be left from the last time it was used and some unfortunate has been cleared out.

    Sounds dodgy.
:idea:I got an idea, an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about:idea:

    ok here i go again

if the camera appears to be built in the atm and not like someoen has stuck it on

then it is for the the reassurance of customers to double check if soemone is looking behind you

however the bank itself has a camera behind this camera which the customer cannot see, so if someone is watching, the camera has recorded all.

    hope this now helps

You don't give any information as to where exactly the mirror is positioned. Would it be possible for people to be able to work out your PIN by standing behind you by looking at it? The mirror would have to be placed in exactly the right position for someone to be able to do that, and even then it would depend on the height of the person looking.

I've never seen one, so I'm not really in a position to comment, but the more likely answer is that it's there for security reasons. Either it allows the atm users to see what/who is behind them, or it's concealing a camera installed by the bank to help prevent card fraud (if someone's trying to use a dodgy or stolen card, they're caught on camera), or possibly even both.

almost all atm machines now have a camera hidden behind it for bank security.. mind you the pictures it takes are rubbish.. they help police find out who has used a stolen card or at least they suppose to anyway..
