Taxi Insurance for 20y/o?

Options
It's no doubt that the reason why I'm struggling to find a single thread on any website about taxi insurance for 20y/o's is due to the eye watering and bum clenching quotes they receive.

So, in the politest way possible I would like to ask whether as a 20y/o, wanting to start my venture asap, has the ability to become one? Simple as that.

I've contacted a few local firms in and around my area but they only operate a over 25 fleet policy (which I know is rubbish because I see a few youngsters my age driving taxis).

Cheapest quote I got was maximum £10,000/yr.

Oh and bring on the jokes about me asking to become a taxi driver at 20...:money:

Thanks!

As you have seen some younger guys driving, maybe ask them directly, or whoever the cab firm are, they work for.

Not a chance in hell. Unless you live in London you'd be better off getting a LGV license to drive trucks than drive a taxi. I know a fair few taxi drivers, my uncle even had one. None of them have tuppence to rub together.

It will depend on the rules of the council of the area you want to taxi in. Some have a minimum age requirement and/or a minimum time you have been driving. There may also be rules on how old a car can be if you're putting it on as a taxi.

Can't say I've heard of anyone actively wanting to be a taxi driver though. It used to be lucrative but not so much anymore.

The lowest I've seen is 3.

In this area you don't have a hope in hell of getting a car plated unless its less than 3 years old AND wheelchair accessible or electric.

Of course thats providing OP is looking to put a vehicle on and not rent one thats already plated.

I've seen plenty of 10/11 year old taxis round here so age just depends on the council.

Anyway I'd rather do private hire, most of the private hire firms round here just run off sat nav type device or a smart phone app where you can choose and decline jobs as you see fit while logged on. I know someone who did it for a while and was making nearly £200 a night on Friday and Saturdays alone.

By that do they mean a wheelchair with a person in it, or the wheel chair in the boot?
Wheelchair accessible with a person seated in the car is not posible in many cars.

Round here it has to be less than 3.5 years when you first register with the council but you can keep it registered until it's 10 years old (12 years for newer vehicles).

Applies to taxis and private hires. No idea how that works for people hiring out vintage cars for weddings and so on.

edited as they've changed the policy in since I last looked!

That might be the case here. It's only taxis that I see at that age, most of the private hires are new to just a few years old.

I think this thread is about a 20 year old driver not a 20 year old car. See post #1.
