Hi! Have an old XP PC . always careful with antivirus/malware etc. To cut a long story short have FOUR unwanted software items which I simply can't get rid of. Worse is a weird Oriental one.....all boxes no text. 1.4gb! How the hell do I get rid of these, preferably a freeware program? Tearing my hair out!

If it doesnt show them they are not installed and you just need to delete the program folder.
Its like a portable exe, no install required. Run the exe and it just works, even if you move it around.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I found 1.4 gb of supposedly deleted files on an xp pc through this. http://www.diskspacefan.com/download.html
Not visible. I didn't know they were there. From memory I used it to delete them but not sure if the new version does that. You might be able to find an old version or just identify where the unwanted files are.0 -
- Delete the program files (from C:\Program Files)
- Delete any user settings (maybe in C:\Users\<username>\<program name> or "My Documents")
- Delete the uninstaller entry from this registry hive:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

As a side note, I hate to say it, but you probably need to think about moving away from XP. Software is in very short supply and while it still works, you will find it begins to become more difficult to use. Newer hardware probably won't work with it and it's very very outdated and security updates have stopped.
Windows 7 runs relatively well on PC's 'designed' for Windows XP and Vista (by that I mean PC's that were designed with Windows XP in mind around 2004-5 etc). Maybe have a try with 7? Or you could try a free alternative. Ubuntu or Linux Mint?0 -
Thanks. ..will try all solutions! Esuhl.
Sorry to be thick but how do I know WHICH entries in c drive to delete?0 -

It's the folders you're deleting, not an "entry". Right click on the shortcuts or icons for the apps and click the "go to file location" (presuming XP has this, it's been awhile since I've used it). Then just go up one level (normally) and delete the folder, the name on it should be obvious but be careful, then clean up the registry by running ccleaner. You may need to restart after this and run ccleaner once more.
Already suggested this BTW as have others.Colin_Maybe wrote: »Delete the relevant folders and run ccleaner (if it works on XP still)?0 -

As Colin says, you can look at the properties of any program shortcuts to see where they point to. A program called XYZ will probably be installed to C:\Program Files\XYZ.
If your Windows username is DEBTMONKEY1A, there may be some user files/settings in C:\Users\DEBTMONKEY1A\XYZ.
Each registry entry will have the program name listed, as displayed in the "Add/Remove Programs" applet.0
