I am staying in The USA for 3 weeks and want to get a prepaid sim to use just to local mobiles. Any idea how I go about getting one. I've looked on line but can't really understand how to go about it. Thanks.

its possible - did so myself a few years ago - bought off ebay and followed the instructions to activate a couple of days before I travelled but if I were you I would just get a 3 sim free to use in USA
Get it on a rolling one month contract if you time it so your contract date is around day 10 of your stay then paying for 2 months gets you tons of minutes and data

You can get a sim in any drug store, Walmart, Target ect over there. Most come loaded with credit (you use credit to receive calls over there as well as make them).

For calling a US cellphone, as OP mentions, and for anyone calling them from a US number, international charges apply. Better to just get the best deal available prepaid SIM when there.

We bought one when we landed at JFK from a booth there.

it was for only US domestic calls/data though

Cheap enough for what we wanted and didn't use all of the data allowance - which was surprising as our sat nav didn't work in the car initially and we had to get out of NY so used the data for the map app

Agree with most of the previous posters except that the phone might not work in both the UK and USA. So you will need to check up on network frequencies.

You can buy a USA PAYG SIM cards direct from a USA seller through eBay. But allow for delivery time which could be upwards of two weeks. I regularly buy coins from USA coin dealers and the delivery time by USPS Priority varies widely: My quickest is 4 days and my slowest is 3 weeks but note that customs inspection is a factor.

Otherwise you can get a PAYG sim in USA almost anywhere.

As far as I know "Feel At Home" on Three only applies to calls to UK numbers

A duel sim phone can be handy. One sim for Three, for calling home and anyone you're with. And a secend sim for US internal use.
