Hi all I currently do a 15 mile each way trip to work every day and some outings on the weekend.

Any advice on whether to go for diesel or petrol?

Should I choose to buy a 2016 diesel for example will i incur any of the new diesel taxes in the future?

Many thanks

No, buy one of the new generation petrol that gives a similar mpg.

Unless of course you!!!8217;re planning on keeping it forever.

Large or small car? SUV, estate or hatchback?

Dependent on your weekend mileage, I make your working week (5days?) 150 miles. If you are not doing a large mileage at weekend outings, perhaps another 100 to 150 miles. 300 miles a week would not be good for a diesel: I would choose petrol, but again it depends upon the type od car you are looking for.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

What affect does the size of the car have. Say for instance I choose a Honda CRV?

I'd think you may fun into DPF blockage issues with a diesel and low mileage. I'd look at a modern petrol engines

What do you mean when you say new generation petrol? Would a 2016 qualify?

Is it possible for diesel cars which are currently registered tax free or lowest possible tax band to suddenly have charges thrown on them in future?

Are people thinking diesel prices will rise proportionately higher as compared with petrol now they seem to have fallen out of favour?

Of course it's possible when politicians are in charge of determining what taxes to apply. Whether it's likely is rather more imponderable.

If I was in the market for a Golf or Polo sized car and had a 16 mile commute, I'd be looking for an EV.

Your mileage similar to mine by the looks of it, maybe slightly more at weekends for you. I currently run a 53 plate ford fusion diesel (older, so no DPF issues and £30p.a. road tax) and average 60+ mpg. I can get upper 50s when I use Mrs. G-J's 03 plate Mondeo diesel on the same driving if you want something bigger..both well under £1k to buy.

If you're only on about newer more expensive cars, maybe diesel and DPF issues may not be for you, but do your research.
