I wonder how may people were stranded at petrol stations with no means of paying for their fuel.

I keep enough cash for a full tank of fuel hidden in my car just in case one day I find myself unable to pay by card, or I forget my wallet.
Petrol stations have a procedure if you can't pay so there should be no need to carry a wad of cash in the car.

TSB are also moving to Debit Mastercard as are Virgin Money.
Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank are currently the largest debit MC issuers.

All the new entrants seem to favour it over Visa Debit.

I would rather simply pay for my fuel and drive away than enter that procedure.

Many fuel stations accept contactless so having a phone with a payment option is a useful backup.

Lots of the bigger chains also have free to use LINK ATMs too.

Starling Bank issues a Debit MasterCard too. Curve which other cards are linked to is a Debit MasterCard. In prepaid Soldo is a Debit MasterCard.
