ive read what you are all saying, i really would rather pay it via internet banking
this was coming from virgin HO (gosforth), that yes they will accept bankers cheque (£25 off lloyds) or electronic transfer from lloyds (£30) or cash, wont accept anything over £750 from debit card over the phone, i will give them a ring to see if i can pay over the counter on debit card
Electronic transfer is what you can do by internet banking or over the phone (aka Faster Payment). No need to pay for the £30 CHAPS service for a payment this small.

Just input the bank details online and the payment will be there same or next day.

The details are on the Virgin Money website, under the section "How do I make a payment?": https://uk.virginmoney.com/virgin/mortgages/questions-and-answers/

    Where does it say that?

I can see this on the link I posted above (scroll down then click "How do I make a payment".

Electronic payment – you can send us a payment by Faster Payment or BACS directly from your bank using the following details:

    Account number - 00000101
    Sort code – 08-61-15
Reference – your mortgage account number.

Telegraphic Transfer refers to CHAPS payments for which there is a fee. When OH paid off his mortgage the bank (Santander) confirmed they could not accept faster payments for a settlement and I had to pay the CHAPS fee. I assumed because his was an ex A&L mortgage so an old account but this would seem to make sense here- must be something to do with settlements being handled differently. The amount was under the FP limit as well (6.5k)

Here's a potential solution then: make a payment of all but £1 to the normal payment details by faster payment. Then make a debit card payment over the phone to the settlements team for the other £1. Would that work?

No bank worth their salt would do a CHAPS payment for £9k when they could do it for free.
I would suggest the terms do not seem to have been updated - do as other posters have said send it by faster payment.
If you do it in branch you get a paper confirmation.

The £20 versus someone in the bank seeing you walk out with £9k & deciding you are easy game & losing the lot. Alternatively pay £750 over the phone re-dial pay £750 rinse & repeat but only if the calls are free.

Have you made sure that wherever you are intending doing this will actually accept that much in cash? Only just below money laundering amounts too!
