With that sort of sum I think it would be sensible to give the branch some advance warning of what you're intending to do and ask what sort of proof of id you may need.

cheers for that info, i`m trying to get through to phonebank again

its to pay my mortgage off, the receiving bank has cleared it for me to pay by cash in there branch as paperwork is cleared for the cash, and im not paying lloyds £20 for 1 of there cheques

can you not just write a personal cheque to pay off the balance or do a bank transfer via internet banking
  • i asked about internet transfer and that was a no go the mortgage bank said
i dont have a cheque book not sure if 1 is supplied with my acc
going to have to watch over my shoulder walking about with it :(

    Seriously?!

Which mortgage provider thinks it's a better idea for you to turn up on their doorstep with a bag full of cash rather than a simple, seamless, auditable and cheap electronic transfer? Or debit card payment for that matter?

1 Whilst you were on the phone with Phonebank they would have been able to do the transfer for you - for free.
2 You could have made the payment using internet banking for free.
3 In branch they could make a faster payment for you for free.
4 It is totally stupid for someone to cash £9k just to take it to another bank to pay a bill (whether mortgage or anything else).
5 Are you sure you are not been duped? Sounds just like a scam to me - withdraw cash here , deposit the money there to be sent to the ''mortgagee''s bank.
6 No mortgage company/bank/lender/building society will refuse a payment from your account and insist on cash.

7 Read post 5 again very carefully ........please!

ive read what you are all saying, i really would rather pay it via internet banking
this was coming from virgin HO (gosforth), that yes they will accept bankers cheque (£20 off lloyds) or electronic transfer from lloyds (£30) or cash, wont accept anything over £750 from debit card over the phone, i will give them a ring to see if i can pay over the counter on debit card
