Why is everyone saying that this is unworkable?

If, as an employer, I felt that there was a business need to only allow one member of staff to take holidays at any time, and was then faced with bickering about this from the staff, I would simply allocate holidays on a rota basis. There would be no choice about when those holidays were taken. I certainly wouldn't allow the issue of staff holidays to take up any significant amount of my time or to become a problem for my business.

OP. Either work with the system that offers you some flexibility or be prepared to lose that flexibility.

My place has a "no more than three weeks off in a row" without coming back into work for at least one day. Although it's more relaxed now, people did in the past fly home for one day, then fly back...the HR boss at the time: "if we can do without you for more than three weeks, do we really need you?" lol

What do children have to do with it? There is no right to be able to take holidays when schools are off.

We are trying to devise a plan of action and talk to the boss but it is difficult. He is very stubborn.

I think if I was a boss and had implemented a plan that the employees were unhappy with, I'd be more receptive to suggestions on how the work could be covered with more than 1 person off than a delegation just wanting to moan

You would last about a month were I work. With that attitude.

I ran a successful business for over 20 years. You wouldn't have even lasted a month in my employment with your attitude.

A small business is very different to a large employer in terms of being able to cover holidays etc. The needs of the business must take precedence over what employees want or else there won't be a business or any employees. If you don't like it then get another job with an employer that can offer more flexibility.

Tbh I really don't see the issue.

I don't think your boss is being unfair, it is pretty standard in small companies

At the end of the day, it’s also the legal position, companies can impose/ allocate leave. Custom & practice is all very well but it then becomes a choice of whether to live with the change or try and persuade and lobby for a better solution. The company must take employees reaction into account when implementing g change or risk losing experience, tacit knowledge and customer relationships wrapped up in their employees

As advised by posters further up the thread, much better to agree on a fair system that everyone subscribed to and go to management with it. Unions are of course the ideal conduit for acting for their members in such a case.

I have worked for a large American oil company for 20 plus years as a senior control room operator. You could not keep me in shares let alone a salary.

We work 24/7. Decent, modern companies work for a happy medium between work and family life/holidays. We don't need dinosaurs like you whose mantra is....if you don't like it get another job. We find solutions. The upside and pay back for the employer is.......motivated staff, low sick levels, low turnover of staff, experience staff.........amount a few.

Like I said.............you would be gone inside a month when no one would work for you.

    So 1 in 6 is ok..........................how about 1 in 7..................1 in 10.

    When is the breaking point?
