Insuring free phone

I have taken out a 12 month contract and received free phone - can I insure something that has been given to me free, as the small print of the companies offering mobile phones insurance that I have looked say they need to see the receipt for the phone.

  • Put the money in a jar instead.

I am amazed that they didn't try and sell you insurance with the phone anyway!

Although they want to see the receipt this has nothing to do with the price paid (insurance is designed to put you back in the same situation you were in prior to the incident for which you are claiming). So they will replace the item if it is eg. burnt in a fire.

The receipt "proves" the model you have, and the date it was supplied.
