Well I do this to an extent. But I only leave it out to speed the thaw and till it is no longer rock hard. It still feels cold when I put it in the fridge to thaw completely. Even that probably isn't advisable but I have never had any ill effects.
I wouldn't eat chicken that has been left out all day. I have actually thrown meat that I forgot about and which had defrosted completely then been been out for another hour or so. You can't tell by sniffing whether it is safe. Apparently cooking well will kill the bacteria but not all toxins. Don't ask me what the difference is but that's what Google says!

Yes it is waste but if there is a risk of getting ill from something I would rather bin it.

    i'd say bin it!

Left to thaw to room temperature - breeding ground for bacteria, god knows what else!

Do you throw a lot of food away?
    I'd guess you do.

I'd cook and eat the chicken.
I've left chicken breasts straight out of the freezer on the worktop, come home and decided we'd have something else, stuck them in the fridge and cooked them the following day.
    And we've been fine.

Wasn't there something on the news the other week about kids not having immunity because everything is now so clean and clinical.

My Grandma managed without a fridge.
  • What do people think about thawing meat under water to speed it up? I often do that and wonder if I'm putting myself at risk, though I haven't noticed any ill effects. The cat's been fine too - she loves raw chicken.

People are also very strange about defrosting chicken breasts and won't even cook them if they are still a little frozen. However I find that when they are still a little bit frozen they cut so much easier, otherwise when they get to the slimey stage it's more difficult.
I buy my mother in law a bag of Irish recipe sausages from ocado. It clearly says best cooked from frozen, apparently that's wrong and they have to be thoroughly defrosted before cooking.

I do leave meat out to defrost usually covered, I think you would know if you had left it too long if it was warm and smelly. If it's still relatively cold to the touch I would think it would be ok.

I often do this with chicken, mince and even prawns, I cook it as soon as it's thawed, never been ill.

I also leave stuff out overnight, in the microwave so the cats don't pinch it. I take it out of the freezer before bed, usually around 11pm and put it in the fridge when I get up around 7.30, so much shorter than leaving it out all day, the heating is off and there's no sunlight coming so the house is cooler and a more even temperature than during the day.

I'm sure you could market that idea, a Solar Defrosting Oven :rotfl:

I used to do that a lot at one time, but I stopped because I got fed up with the water absorbed spitting and splashing during cooking.
