Internet data scam

I firmly believe that data via the internet is an everyday utility just like gas, electricity and water.
All of these commodities can be measured by the volume used and charged according to the tarif agreed with the customer.
I do not understand why data should be treated differently in the way it is charged other than the network providers are on to a winner every time a customer buys a volume of data e.g. 10Gb and then has any unused data stolen at the end of the period.
Should there not be a regulator demanding that bills are presented to customers based on the actual volume used and the agreed tarif without any smoke and mirrors and hidden costs and put an end to this pay in advance and "USE IT OR LOSE IT" trickery.

Do you agree that data should be charged by amount used and not time limited? 60 votes

Disagree"data via the internet" IS sold in this manner .
It is mobile data that you are talking about, and it is sold in the same manner as all other mobile services
eg call minutes and text allowance - which to buy a certain amount to use in a month.
Some providers let your minutes roll over , just as some providers let your data roll over.
If they sold data in the way that you want them to then they would have to increase their prices for everybody which they are unlikely to do0 -
DisagreeI never use up my free unlimited text messages, I want a refund!0

Or just don't be on such an unsuitable tariff in the first place. There's plenty of 1 and 2Gb tariffs available, and also pay as you go which is exactly what you are wanting. Paying for what you use.
But then I suppose new shiny phone's tend to come with the more expensive tariffs so.......0 -
Disagree10 nil so far .0

Would it be better to think of it as a £x standing charge, with yGB free dat? ;-)0

AgreeI so agree here.
I weould rather be contracted to a reasonable price per GB (or whatever). Than be forced to choose in advance. I can't see why anyone would not.
Except the mobile companies (and some broadband providers) prefer you to choose up front and ram you sideways should you choose to go over.
The simple fact that suposedly prefered contracted customers get charged more that pay as you go out of their allowence is quite frankly !!!!ing ridiculous.
Still it's a lot better these days than it used to be.
Still the only change on anything should be data, Calls? Date. Texts? Data. Drop the !!!!!!!!. It's all data. And always has been. My first mobile in 1997 was such. (Some may remmeber the analogue networks but most wont).0 -
Disagreesounds like someone has a big bill they are trying to avoidmortui non mordent0

DisagreeConversely buy a phone with limited battery life, then you can't use too much data and change toa low tariff.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0
