Of course you'd recognise their voice.

    Not really ...
only last night I heard a video my ex boyfriend made which he posted to Facebook.
We were friends at school and went out for over 2 years in the early 2000s. We haven’t spoken in person since (about 16 years) then but are friends on Facebook and chat occasionally about whats going on in our lives. Last night I thought to myself I couldn’t believe I didn’t even recognise his voice at all. It could have been anyone. If he called me I wouldn’t have had a clue from the voice. That said I would have known from what he said.

Sorry your old friend duped you. It’s a horrible thing to happen but as you said you just need to accept it and move on and recognise it was a hard and expensive lesson.

For reference, what terrible things can happen when you lend to "friends" and "family". Let it be a lesson to us all.

    Sorry your "friend" duped you.

  • A couple of years ago, I had an email from my cousin telling me she was stranded abroad and needed my help and money to get back to England.

Fortunately, I was able to ring and find out she was sitting comfortably in her cottage in Saddleworth. But she told me several of her friends had had the same email.

So someone had either hacked her Facebook or her email list.

Did you check you 'friend's' page to see if they have posted recently, and if they are actually on holiday? Many people often post pictures and updates.

I agree with the others, this does sound like a classic fraudster. Why would someone you knew from school 15 years ago and barely know since ask you for cash? People usually get in touch with family first (and it's the consulate who help with this). Sorry :(

If it was definitely the friend you can always post publicly on his wall about it or contact mutual friends.

Was the thing you said in school mentioned I your online conversations or your page?

3 years ago, we received an email from someone purporting to be my wife's cousin and his wife, "Stuck in Thailand having been robbed of all our money, clothes, etc, blah blah blah.. please send money to get us home."

This email was sent to several other family and friends. Unfortunately for the scammer, all of us had been with them at a milestone family birthday party, two days before. Asked the cousin's wife (by phone) to consider that her email and password had been hacked, and change both. She refused, saying "Everyone knows it." - I told her how to change it and how to message all contacts with the change. Still refused, so I refused to open any further emails, and block her address, until she did. All our contact now is by phone and all other contacts have done the same.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Sorry to say that you are not going to see that money again and sorry to hear that you have been scammed as you are such a nice person for helping out an old school friend. Take comfort in the fact that he must have been pretty desperate to ask you for money after not seeing you for 15 years, i would never no matter what situation i was in ever ask old school friends for money.
