A slightly different story here, but my boss has gone on record as telling me I must attend the staff xmas party. I am the only one she has told MUST attend. To everyone else it is an option. If she thinks I am attending just because she tells me I must, especially in my own time, she can whistle!

    Why do they bother?
Just to p!ss the staff off, because that seems to be the only motivation and it certainly works.

If it is on your own time then it is an easy way out.

I also hate the enforced Management fun, and wont be attending this years xmas bash even though its free and at my fave restaurant.

Once when I worked for a big bank, I was hauled in the office and asked why I didnt go to the pub with the rest of the team on a friday afternoon., I hate socialising with colleagues I can never truly relax and be myself. For fear of having one too many sherbets, and telling the boss he is a to**er:D

Just because you work with someone doesn't mean you have to like them. Seems an odd concept to some people

I'm going to move this thread I'm afraid - I think there are other boards where you might get more replies to help your wife.

There are serius equalities issues here - this company seems to be assuming all the employees are Christians, or are comfortable taking part in a party to celebrate a religious festival.

What utter Political Correct tosh. It's attitudes like that which PROMOTE intolerance.
  • Very simple - go have a chat with HR, i very much doubt an xmas lunch can be inforced

Conor, in case you didn't realise, there are laws in this country against discriminating on grounds of religion or belief in employment.
If you think Political Correctness means respecting someone's difference, then I guess you are right!

    Hi,

Well, could it be your boss has a thing for you??? Be careful when the beer is flowing then.

It could just be that your boss thinks you will be the one who won't attend hence tries this tactic. It's been tried on me before...to little avail.

I agree on this. Forcing people to attend parties and "team building" exercises just shows them up to be a farce. You also tend to find that the parties are booked with the boozy management in mind who just want to hang around in their own corner and ignore the staff they manage!

Our company does these and most people avoid them like the plague and go to their own organised events where people actually enjoy themselves.

It's worth talking to the HR dept. If they close, they will be thinking that she is getting paid to go home. However, the HR dept may be able to arrange something to get around it as she sounds like she has an issue that is not related to work, but to outside of work as well. Totally understandable and she shouldn't be penalised for it.
