I sold a handful of playstation network credits done via mobile topups on ebay
(I had some spare PAYG SIMs with credit I didnt need)

Normally Im fairly careful who I trade with specifying I will only trade with users who have plenty of feedback & not newly created accounts but one guy was borderline, account created a couple of months ago with a handful of feedbacks, so i risked it

Unfortunately a couple of days later he has now raised an ebay claim saying the money has 'disappeared' from his account which unless I'm am missing something is obviously a scam

Ive asked him to send me a screenshot of his transaction history so i can 'look into' the imaginary 'disappeared' money which he obviously will not be able to provide (unless he 'doctors' the screenshot) but Im guessing thats completely pointless as ebay will not accept my 'text receipt' as evidence of delivery of digital goods

Im pretty sure since all I have is a text receipt saying the money has been credited then I wont be able to fight his claim but just wanted to post here anyway in case theres anything I can do I havent thought of

Im guessing sending a recorded delivery letter to his address with a physical copy of the 'text receipt' & using that to 'prove' delivery will also be pointless & just throwing good money after bad

If its a risky item you need to budget that this will happen. You could post them a letter with a code or something.

That will not stop the real scammers from claiming its not as described and sending your letter back, with you paying return postage.

i thought that only business sellers had to automatically cover return postage ?

do ebay auto charge return postage for even non business account sellers now ?

Legally all sellers have to pay return postage for a SNAD item, and eBay enforce that. You are probably thinking of the right to return on a change of mind purchase as on eBay that does differ between a business and a private seller. A business seller must accept a return (they can insist buyer pays for return) but a private seller can have a policy that says they don't accept returns.

  • eBay's Moneyback Guarantee doesn't cover:

Vehicles, Real Estate, Business & Websites for Sale, Digital Content, Intangible Goods, Classified Ads, Services, and some Business Equipment categories.

If your item comes under those in bold you should call eBay, point them to the policy:

    pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/money-back-guarantee.html

and ask that they close the claim in your favour.

Its against ebay rules to digital goods though

Digitally delivered goods and items which are transferred electronically are not permitted on eBay. The seller must supply the item on a physical format (e.g. CD or hardcopy) and follow the other guidelines in our digitally delivered goods policy.

Even though ebay buyer protection won't cover the transaction, if the buyer used paypal then Paypal buyer protection does so if the buyer/scammer opens a dispute for an unauthorised transaction, they will probably be refunded.
Even if this was to fail, they still have the option of contacting their card issuer (assuming that their paypal account was funded this way) and requesting a chargeback for unauthorised use of their card.
  • Not sure if the below covers it:

Your purchase is an eligible purchase. Purchases of most goods and services are eligible (including travel tickets, intangible items such as rights of access to digital content and other licences), except for the following transactions:

    ...

    purchases of items equivalent to cash (including, without limitation, stored value items such as gift cards and pre-paid cards);

thanks for the replies - rather than give in to what is obviously a scam and refund before he 'asks ebay to step in' Im going to wait to see if he does that & take the hit on my metrics - this will be my first ever one (I dont sell much) so hopefully it wont get me banned from selling - when he raises it to ebay I will phone them about the rules regarding no coverage on digital goods to see if they will close it down but Im not that confident given that ebay tend to side with buyers & I dont have any postal delivery proof

Ive now told him i suspect hes trying to defraud me since he wont provide me with a screenshot of his playstation account transactions

he was fairly easy to track down on ebay due to his unusual turkish name - this video he made does sort of fit in with his scam attempt

Can you clarify exactly what case is open on ebay, as the only two possible ones are INR (item not received) and SNAD (Significantly not as described) 'money disappeared from account' doesn't fit either of those.

Or do you mean it is a paypal case- in which case the advice given will be entirely different.

its an ebay case for INR - he simply states

"the money just disappeared from my account i checked my wallet and its not there"

I think hes worded his claim that way because he knows I have a text receipt (as i told him straight after the payment) so he didnt just want to say the money never arrived in his account

money just doesnt 'disappear' from an account & he wont send me a transaction screenshot so Im hoping ebay will see through this scam attempt but since its only £10 Im not going to fret to much if he wins the claim based on, say, me not having a postal tracking number -

i would be concerned if I got banned from selling though due to this single event since i only have 73 transaction in the past year

some may think this a little silly but Ive also told him that (due to his facebook profile) as it looks like he is either still a minor or at least very likely a teenager still living with his parents then i will be writing to his parents explaining what hes done - I can at least try to cause the little scrote some embarassment for his petty theft assuming his parents are decent people
