W10 upgrade woes

Got the prompt to install the W10 upgrade this afternoon so did.
Eventually got a screen asking me to select a keyboard layout.
Selected a United Kingdom.
Got a screen with options to either rollback, restore volume 3, repair my PC or restart.
None of these options do anything expect go back to the keyboard layout screen as it tells me it has no previous volume, no restore point and can't repair.
After a bit of faffing around I'm now resetting the PC (saving my files and losing added programmes).
What went wrong? And how can I avoid it happening again?
Thanks

No idea! Just using my USB recovery media.
No idea what you are alluding to either.
It was the W10 April upgrade.0 -

Thanks both. Yes, I had avast installed and wish I'd seen that article five hours ago!
Laptop has now reset so my days will be spent downloading programmes. As I live in what can be classed as a field with very poor broadband speeds it make take some time. I'll leave things like MS Office 365 until I get to the big city on Thursday and my Mum's fibre connection.
Thanks again.0 -
