Mifi internet on a canalboat

Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some advice from all you internet experts!

I live on a canal boat and so far have survived by using my phone as my only source of internet. However I'm going to be working from home so I'll need internet on my laptop. I'd prefer to use a mifi device rather than a dongle so I can have internet on more than one device at once.

Lots of providers will give you a mifi free or cheap, but then you’re locked into a contract with them (often two years to get the best price). I’d rather buy my own unlocked mifi device and then shop around for the best deal.

So, I’ve calculated that I need at least 32GB per month. (Streaming music and TV as well as general internet use) I saw the deal that Martin mentioned; Virgin mobile £18 per month for 45gb, which sounds perfect - but tethering is not allowed? So it sounds like I wouldn’t be allowed to buy a sim and use it in a mifi device. Is this right?

According to this page: https://www.4g.co.uk/unlimited-mobile-broadband/ it seems that quite a few providers limit the data you’re allowed to use while tethering. I can’t be the only person who has ever needed to use a mifi device for ALL their internet use, so as anyone got any advice about how I can legally tether enough data?

Thanks!

If a sim doesn't allow tethering then you won't be able to use it in a mifi.
You don't need to be tied into a contract to buy / use a mifi. I got one from Currys a while back and just cancelled the contract, think I had to pay for one month, the mifi could be unlocked to use any sim, a unlock code off ebay was a few £.
A 30gb data sim will cost you around £25 / £30 pm and should be ok in a mifi.
Are you always in the same location ?
32gb seems a lot of data, are you streaming a lot of video?0 -
Three Mobile have got several SIM only plans for mifi devices on monthly contracts (3G and 4G) if you already have a compatible device. Might be worth a look. Mifi plans are intended for multiple connected devices and aren't considered as tethering - that's when you are using a phone SIM.0

Look at 3 HomeFi. They do monthly, yearly or two yearly contracts starting at £23 a month for 40GB. Unlimited downloads for Netflix and some other stuff.
The 4G router will run off 12v if you don't have 240v AC. We use one at our off-grid static caravan.0 -
Thanks for your replies all! Lots of good tips I shall look into. I know 32GB is a lot but I like to stream films to watch with my dinner! Plus I need to use the internet a lot for work so I'd rather have too much than too little and end up getting charged for going over my limit.0

Using a Mifi unit isn't tethering, I use one regularly in my caravan!! I use it with my phone, a tablet, and my laptop.
Simply buy a data SIM, sorted!David.0
