However, work pays off only in the future.

I feel a bit sorry for you if that's been your experience.

It's patently obvious,. If the lawn needs mowing I can either be industrious and do it now, so I have a nice lawn to lounge around in later in the sun. Hence my reward follows later. Or, I can be lazy and instantly idle around now, right away. Being lazy rewards me right now. Because I'm idle I get o sit around right now.

The problem comes when the lazy individual looks across at the industrious individual's lawn and decides that life is unfair and so the other guy should have his lawn taken away.

That reminds me of a related experiment that the Americans did with children, which I saw on tv a few years back:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_marshmallow_experiment

The Stanford marshmallow experiment was a series of studies on delayed gratification in the late 1960s and early 1970s led by psychologist Walter Mischel, then a professor at Stanford University.[1] In these studies, a child was offered a choice between one small reward provided immediately or two small rewards if they waited for a short period, approximately 15 minutes, during which the tester left the room and then returned. (The reward was sometimes a marshmallow, but often a cookie or a pretzel.) In follow-up studies, the researchers found that children who were able to wait longer for the preferred rewards tended to have better life outcomes, as measured by SAT scores,[2] educational attainment,[3] body mass index (BMI),[4] and other life measures.[5]

But, of course, the person isn't necessarily being lazy. They might prefer to leave it for a day or so as it's not the biggest deal in the world and it will get done. Maybe they know it's going to be a lovely day today and not so good tomorrow so take in the rays today - cut the grass when there is cloud about tomorrow. Meanwhile the other guy gets hot and sweaty today - and misses sitting in the sun. Forward thinking!

The problem comes when the person who has cut their lawn decides to tell the other person that they are lazy and they know better and they should cut their grass now.
