Sorry to repost this. I am trying to use printer attached to PC to print from laptop. There have been excellent posts in the past 2005 2006 from Tiger Matt, Chippy_minton, albatross et al regarding this problem. However, I have tried all their advice to no avail. This is the current situation and there may be some obvious holes in what i am doing.
PC linked directly to printer and router. Laptop and PC can both access internet via router. When pinging I only get 1 ip address - that of the router.
So I can not find the IP address of lap or PC
Also, different versions of XP Pro and home - is this a problem?
Any help much appreciated

start, run, cmd
ipconfig
will tell you the ip address
if the router is 192.168.x.y
then they are probably y+1, and y+2
pro and home shouldnt be a problem, unless the pro is attached to a work domain, rather than a workgroup
a software firewall may block the pings.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Albatross, thanks for replying so quickly. How can I find out if attached to a work domain?0

If I 'ipconfig' from laptop, everything is identical to PC and appears to go thru ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection. But is does say Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection Media State - Media disconnected. Other than the above there is no difference in ipconfig of either machine
IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway are all identical0 -
does it belong to work? when you login to a domained pc, it will have a logon prompt for name/pwd/domain
what are the identical ip addressesEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Sorry understand about domain. No PC is mine.
IP address is in the form xxx.xxx.x.xxx0 -

IP addresses as follows
Above addresses is the line 'connection specific DNS suffix' ???
IP address 192.168.1.100
Default gateway 192.168.1.1
Are these just to connect to internet??
Albertross - many many thanks for your help and advice but I think your dealing with IT simpleton ie yours truly!! I really do not want to trouble you further
Think i am going to leave this and tell daughter to use memory stick and print from PC.
