someone linked to this site in another email - www.petsitterswap.com
its aim is to put pet-owners in touch who live in the same area and who would be willing to pop in and feed your pets for free - and vice versa.
not sure how safe it is. i did register and a lady contacted me who has cats like myself who needs occasional pet-sitting, we haven't exchanged addresses or anything but she lives a couple of roads away. we have both admitted that we would be nervous using a complete stranger but we could always meet for coffee and check each other out, establish a rapport, see proof of ID that sort of thing beforehand. not even sure yet that this is for me - my paid cat-sitter is great and works for my vet anyway - but it is an option to explore so thought i would pass it on.
I've mention this site somewhere here, I use them & have linked up with a lady in her 60's who came to do my rats while I was away. She was very very good, can't fault her at all! You can get references too of course. You have to see ID & i'm quite happy to use them again.0 -
just registered - what a great idea - thanks!0

I wouldn;t leave my cat alone longer than an overnight stay and even then I'd rush back first thing. She gets very lonely and upset if she's 'abandoned' as she was a rescue who really WAS abandoned and if she's left she gets sooo upset and disturbed.
As someone said, you wouldn;t leave a child so why leave your pet?:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

I've got 3 cats and love them lots, but that's a bit much! You wouldn't put your child in a cattery or get it to use a litter tray either; there's no comparison!0 -

I wouldn;t put my cat in a cattery either! ANd litter tray is the equivalent of toilet IMO.
My cat is my fur baby:cool: DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :cool::heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

No but you'd toilet train the child & put it in a creche or have another look after it, you wouldn't leave it tho! Animals still need care as do anything!0

I've left my kitty overnight once, that was 2pm - 2pm and she was fine but I wouldn't make a habit of it and any longer I'd want someone to go in to her.0

I leave mine overnight a fair bit but I do use automatic feeder. I have left them for weekends ocassionally - they don't like it but they are ok. I also make sure that I use an automatic water dispenser & use the silica litter (which they refuse to use for the prescribed month so I only use it @ those times).:rolleyes:0

I have to respond to this! At risk of being flamed, I think there are worse things that can happen to a cat.
For example, if a cat spends all its life couped up inside a flat as many do sadly, I think that's much worse than lack of human company. (A dog is completely different - I'm strictly referring to felines here).
So long as a cat has access to the outdoors (normally via a cat flap) and a warm place to sleep inside and enough food, s/he will be very happy and healthy.
Clearly, I'm likely to be biased, but I don't see how someone could claim, for example, that taking a cat into a foreign environment like a cattery could be a more pleasant experience.
Taking a cat with his/her owner is also in my (subjective) view likely to be more traumatic than the options above.
I think a good pet autopetfeeder is second only to having a neighbour willing to feed your cat. Even then, many cats are fed at certain times and changes to the schedule can also have an affect.0 -

Nor does she have 3.5metre long cat netted balcony to play on.
If she looks at us we ignore her. In fact she might be a dog, I've never payed that much attention!
Do you think I should hand myself in to the RSPCA?
To the Op this automatic feeder runs on batteries, so as it is not clockwork you might be able to set it to a time later than the time on the one you use now. If that makes sense so extend your feeding slots from four to eight.
I'd check with the makers first to be sure though.
