To Spray or paint fences any recommendations

Hi I am researching the pros and cons of fence sprayers and are they worth it, and do you need to use special paint or is ordinary fence paint OK I had a look online and there seems to be two main sprayers a Cuprinol or Ronseal, one is slightly dearer than the other .My DD has around 12 panels to do 6' x 5'(only on one side ) so I wanted to know roughly
A.how much paint would she need
B. which is the better one to use Paint or sprayer
C. are they worth the £23-31 cost or would it be just as good to slap it on with a big brush

I would consider a proper paint sprayer that you can use indoors as well as for outside spraying. Higher initial cost but a lot more useful.

Most ordinary paints and preservatives will be sprayable, and may be cheaper than buying a special sprayable version.

Be very careful if you choose the spray option as the fine mist can travel considerable distances depending upon weather conditions. My neighbour sprayed his fence and his next door neighbours car - luckily it was quickly noticed and the car cleaned immediately.

Paint spraying of any sort is not a DIY job.
By the time you have faffed about with the sprayer, diluted the paint sheeted everything up, then blocked the nozzle several times you could have done with a paint brush AND had a barbie...........( not the doll obviously )
Just buy a decent sized paint brush & get on with the job.

If you go for a sprayer, the fence IS solid with no gaps between the panels - isn't it?

It may sound obvious, but more than one person has sprayed a gap panel fence - and half of next door's garden!

I would be worried about the sprayed paint entering my lungs. A special mask would add more costs.

I watched somebody as they bought their posh coloured paint and a shiny new, proper, branded fence paint spraying kit ... and set about. A fully competent, able, energetic, careful, thinking person .... they gave up.

They said it turned out that it made a mess with the spray .... and they ended up doing it by brush. It's a lot of faff, messy while you're doing it, have to watch what you're wearing and watch what else might be copping a light dusting of it ... and it was messy to clean up/tidy away.

I've since observed them slapping two more coats on it this year - and they did it all by hand/brush.

I borrowed a cuprinol sprayer a few years back and wasn't impressed.

As mentioned you get a lot of over spray and the nozzle constantly needs stripping to clean out blockages. I also found the sprayable paint to be very watery.

After that I just used cuprinol brush on and found it lasted longer anyway.

I can't get on with a sprayer, I've got quite a lot of fence panels, a couple of gates, a shed and a couple of tables and I buy cheap(er) woodstain from Amazon (end of dye lots or tin designs I guess as it's the same colour but the tins look different) and treat it like painting the Forth Bridge and chip away at it whenever I've got time (and it's not raining) rather than try and do it as a huge job

I rushed to Cuprinol my new fence and now wish I hadn't. My neighbour left theirs to mature into a lovely well-weathered natural colour and my fence needs re-doing every year.
