Family fund grant

Hi. We have applied for laptop for daughter through famiky fund Wsles..We have been accepted and told to get in touch with the firm they use.( we have ref numbers)The only issue is nobidy will tell us how much grant is for.They have offered us a notepad which is nit suitabke for a child in 6th form.They said to have a look at other laptops and we woukd have to pay difference.Thats fine but dont know hiw much grant is.Can anybidy shine lite on this.Thanks.

Look up the cost of the notepad they offered and that is a working estimate for what the grant is. But I suspect they get special deals on the computers so telling you what the cost to them will be wouldn't be very meaningful to you.

Only they can tell you - it may be that there is a little flexibility and that they need you to come back, first, with suggestions of which laptop you would ideally like to get. If you're still going to be buying the laptop through them, then the figures may vary depending which product you chose.

I'd suggest that you contact them again, and ask whether they can give you some guidance, either telling you what the grant is so you can work out whether paying the difference is affordable, or alternatively, give you specifics about 1 or 2 of the possible laptops so you can make a choice.

I think you will find the family fund will insist the laptop has a warranty (about a third of the total price), and given the relatively high price the Family Fund are being charged for a basic laptop (I was in a simlar situation with a tumble dryer), you may find you are better off just buying a laptop yourself - but searching for the most competitive price.

You might find buying a good second hand laptop is a good idea.

What we do is use a notepad for school, pc at home as pcs are far more long lasting. I never find laptops very reliable. I even did some research and built my son's myself.
