Hi,

Do you attract CT surcharge of 50% if you are living in property for less than 6 months during a year? There is no other residence in UK. Rest of the time is spent outside UK.

Thanks

Which part of the UK ?

The issue will, at least partially, come down to the aspect of 'sole or main residence'.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

To determine if the premium applies requires a consideration of 'sole or main residence', 'occupancy' and furnishing before an answer can be given - legislation makes the issue more complicated than it first appears.

Why are you living abroad and why do you return to the property ?

Its a kind of hypothetical question. I am starting new work where I might need to live and work abroad for part of a year. Hence Just trying to understand this situation. And yes property will be fully furnished as it will be used as residence.

    Thanks

Without a full appraisal of the exact circumstances it is likely that the residence here is likely to remain your 'sole or main residence' for council tax purposes which means a premium cannot be applied.

I agree there is unlikely to be surcharge for council tax, your bigger problem will be your house insurance if the property is empty for long periods of time. You may need specialist insurance.
