If you are able to return this notebook to Argos, this is the best option, see the below comment by that
    End:

I agree with fact that this CPU should not be sold with a brand new 2018 computer, however, but the CPU Intel Pentium N3710 may be not that bad as you think.

Recently I have upgraded a CPU (T9600 at less than 10 USD from China) for 9 years old HP Elitebook 8530p (used for my volunteer work with Windows7/LinuxMint). N3710 is more or less same performance with T9600. In my case, thanks to an SSD, my notebook is comfortable for general use.

    Intel Pentium N3710 @ 1.60GHz : 1873

    Intel Core2 Duo T9600 @ 2.80GHz : 1928

As people said here, the most bottleneck is the hard disk, just replace a hard disk with an SSD, your mum should be happy with the performance. (Frankly she doesn't need a powerful CPU for general computing.)

Get an USB hard disk enclosure, (you can find a cheaper one as well)

Crucial MX500 250GB SSD (5 year warranty) - This is the best cost/performance with 5 years warranty. Your notebook may be only with 1 year warranty, but you can get a full 5 years warranty for the SSD.

How to install an SSD - it is much easier than you might think.

    Happy SSD computing

Sorry Toshi, but I do not like your post due to the op paying full price for a crud bit if kit, and you recommend to make do with their bad purchase and spend more money and upgrade which invalidates the warranty and it still leaves it with a slow cpu, only good for surfing apparently. You can't polish a turd, but you can pour glitter on it, or coat it with gloss paint ;).

If it was either old, or second hand, then I'd have no problem, but not a brand new sparkling bit of kit

pennypincher2013, just tale it back to Argos.

Yes, I completely agree with you, if she can still still get a refund from Argos. but I simply assumed this was not the case.

Moreover I would even offer o pay up to 20 % "restocking penalty charge" to Argos if Argos refused to take it back. Then get a business class SSD refurbished notebook, this would be still better off.

The bottom Line: DON'T BUY ANY BRAND NEW HARD DISK COMPUTERS AT 2018.

    Happy SSD computing :)
  • Thanks all. I think it's ok for my mother's use but if it were me, I'm glad to take everyones advice for possible future purchases.

Yeah -- that processor is slow.

According to PassMark benchmarks, the CPU in my ten-year-old PC is three times more powerful.
