Brand new laptop being slow

My mother has recently bought a windows 10 HP Pavillion laptop. It had been slow and chugging so I have been asked to take a look at it. I have done all updates and it has improved but it's still not working as it should be. It seems to be ok if only one thing is being used but once two applications are opened, it is slow. I've checked the CPU, memory and disk usage and have found the CPU and memory go high when two applications are open. It's only Microsoft Edge and Word open, it shouldn't be having trouble.
What can be done to fix this? If I can't fix it, my mother wants to take it back to Argos for a replacement.

Do please tell us the make and model. Some "new" laptops are no better than 15 year old laptops these days. Under £300 99% likely to be useless (so as expected and will not be exchanged if she has used it). Under £400 maybe 50% chance. Above £400 hopefully not bad but there are examples going up to £1000 that are useless, but I would not call them "laptops" in the traditional way.

You don't fix it and risk voiding warranty .
Win10 HP Pavilion tells us nothing as it might simply be underpowered . ( though unlikely in 2018 )

  • This is the laptop: http://www.argos.co.uk/product/8106188
    Model number: 15-bs507na
Intel Pentium N3710 quad core processor.
    1.6GHz processor speed.
    4GB RAM DDR3.
    1TB HDD storage.
    Hard drive speed 5400RPM.
    Microsoft Windows 10.

I have read some of the reviews and others have said about it being slow. There's slow and then there's slooooooowww - you could make a cuppa tea in the meantime.

That processor is garbage - the CPU in my phone has twice the power
    and the HDD is slow

That price would have bought you a very decent business refurb that would blow that pavillion out of the water
  • It seems to work fine when using it internet; which is what my mother does most of all. She says it's ok for that but would've liked it to be perform two tasks at once with ease.

As AndyPix says, that processor is just not good enough to run more than one task at once.

Hindsight I know, and sorry, but if you had come here and asked for advice before buying, you would have been advised of better options.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

That'll never offer decent speed, it's basically an Intel Atom CPU designed for tablets

Strip out any and all bloatware and anti-virus except Windows Defender.

Replacing the super-slow disk with an SSD would make a noticable difference.

I find that sometimes if a computer runs slow and the 'disk' is running at full with only a couple of applications open there is something you can do about it. Here's a link to possible solutions, it's sped up my machine which is double the spec of your mum's one! I used method four: reset virtual memory. It's a step by step guide with pictures, so easy to do even if you're not that tech savy!

Also get rid of any free software that came with the computer and see what programs load up on start up and whether you need them to or not. I turn as many programs to do not load at start up as I can.
