Had to move out - need to cancel my broadband

Hello,

Due to a split with my partner I am moving out of my house this weekend and I am moving with family for a few months so no longer will need internet/broadband. I am 14 months into a Plusnet contract and have another 4 months left. It appears I'll have to pay £100 plus a £30 fee to disconnect the line. I can understand the costs association with the £100 - it's 4 months of the £25 costs but as I am renting is it really my responsibility to pay for disconnecting the line? I assume as a renter someone will move in when the lease runs out, so really it should stay active, but I am not going to have any information to pass on to them. Where do I stand on this?

It is a charge that Openreach levy on each broadband disconnection. Plus net merely pass it on to you.

You are only disconnecting the broadband side of the line, telephone is unaffected

Yes it is down to you to pay for that. It's an Openreach charged levied on ISPs for a cease on the line and Plusnet are one of the ISPs that pass that charge directly onto the customer. Whether you are renting or not has no relevance. The BB can't stay active after you move out as who would be paying the ISP?

However, have you not had the price rise notification from Plusnet? If you have, you have 30 days from the point they let you know to leave penalty free. That could be your get out, depending on when they notified you.

Should have been by now. Give them a call and see what they say as they will be able to tell you when the email was sent to you.

You only have 30 days from when they sent the email to tell them you are leaving and the rises were announced on April 6th so the emails probably would have started to be sent shortly after. So don't delay calling them as if you were one of the first you could find yourself outside the 30 days. Each day you leave it is another day you could have lost.
  • Yes it's your responsibility to pay the termination charges

Thanks all, looks like i've been charged £39 plus £9.50 to leave early due to the price rise but that's better than £130!
