Renting: Installing SKY do I need permission?

Hi,
I'm renting an apartment in a block and I've arranged for Sky to be installed. It was pointed out to me last night that I may need to get permission off the LA before I do this as Sky drill through the wall.
What are peoples experiences of this? Do you think I should just get it installed and when I leave the apartment just get Sky to take it down if the LA doesn't want it left?

Thanks,
Mark.

Yes, you do need to get permission. If not, the landlord is within their rights to remove it and charge you for costs incurred.
    Gone ... or have I?

Yes you must get permission before doing anything like this which affects the condition of the property. A tenant of mine has recently asked, through the agent, if they can have cable installed - fine with me as if anything it enhances the appeal of the house. You will probably find the same with your apartment
  • Thanks for the help guys.
I've sent an email request to the LA asking for confirmation that the installation can go ahead. Unfortunately, they never seem very quick to respond to emails from my experiences with them so far and with a date set for Sunday with Sky it's a race against time :-)
  • Another issue might be that the freeholders don't allow satellite dishes to be installed on the block - it could break the terms of the LL's lease.

I used to rent a flat in a newish development and I remember there being a notice posted reminding owners that satellite dishes weren't allowed (it didn't seem to have stopped many people, though - there were loads on the estate!).
  • my friend once got given notice to leave due to having erected a satellite dish without permission... only problem was she had't erected it - had been there since she moved in & she didn't even have a telly!
  • Yes you will need to get permission, I live in a council flat and needed to fill in a special form and a man came round and inspected the flat too to make sure that it would be safe and not cause any problems for other tenants. It took about 6 weeks to finally get the written permission and the Sky engineer asked to see it before he started work also.
:T The best things in life are FREE! :T
  • Update: Had the information back that I can't put up my own dish (as dreamalittle stated). There is however a shared dish that I can use!

When I ordered, Sky asked if there was a communal dish and I said I didn't know could they tell me and they said No they couldn't due to data protection ?? Just called them to update the situation and now I have to wait till 4:30PM the night before installation to see if Sky will install it to a shared dish and if not I'll have to cancel my order and reorder with a sub-contractor. So bit annoyed at that now.

(plus the fact they won't let me order broadband till the TV is installed, then that takes 15 days to activate, aghhhhh)

    Thanks all.
  • oh - forgot to add - don't get sky it's a waste of money!! :rotfl:

If you haven't got permission from the landlord by the time you've arranged the install for, you should cancel the installation and wait until you do have permission. It's likely to be only a few more days and it's better for you to have the landlord on your side - whereas if you go ahead without the landlord's permission, s/he may be less positively inclined towards you in future.
  • I've got the confirmation to do it in an email response from LA, as long as we use the communal dish, so it's OK now. Going to have to rearrange with Sky now anyway as their installers won't touch shared dishes apparently.

moneysavingmonkey - All the effort I'm going to it better be the best thing ever :-)
