But, as I posted the last time round, why do you have to change absolutely everything - why, for example, do you have to change your insurance policy? As a divorced woman, you have every right to use your (ex) husband's name as you did when you were married.

Well mainly because if I die my death certificate will be in a different name to the insurance policy and my daughter will have enough to cope with, without the extra hassle of trying to sort out the name change issues. If the company are being this difficult and obstructive with me now, I can't imagine they'll be very helpful at the point they're liable to pay out

And while I might still have the right to use my ex-husband's surname, I don't really want to. I see no reason to continue calling myself Mrs Black when I'm not Mrs Black any more.
It's just getting past the 'computer says no' attitude of certain organisations that is so frustrating, but I don't see why I should be forced to continue to use my ex-husband's family name just because these organisations are ignorant of the fact that my previous married name was merely what I was known as for 26 years, not my legal name.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

I totally agree that you shouldn't have to, I was simply suggesting ways of making your life easier. I don't really see that having an insurance policy in your married name is the same as "being known by" in general.

During both my marriages I was able to pay in cheques in either name, having taken a copy of my marriage certificate in to the bank and getting them to make a note of the fact and , although I took neither of my husbands' names officially, I still have some things in my late husband's name that it just isn't worth fiddling around changing.

I suppose I might feel differently if we were divorced but, as a widow, I'm quite happy to be called Mrs Whatever sometimes if I can save myself a lot of hassle by not insisting I'm actually Ms Tabbitha. Sometimes it's just easier to go with the flow, hence my suggestion.:)

I know what you're saying (re 'going with the flow') and there are a couple of old bank accounts that I rarely use that I haven't bothered changing because the hassle outweighs the benefit at the moment (I may change these at some point when/if I start using them again) but the life insurance is the thing that's worrying me at the moment.
There's no point in having life insurance that won't pay out if I die and I don't want my daughter to have the hassle of having to sort it out.

I think it's normal for widows to keep using Mrs and their married name. At least, I've ever known any widows who reverted to their maiden name.

If it's worrying you then definitely try and sort it. I'm one of those who just doesn't worry, so it's ok for me saying it's fine, just leave it. In fact you have just reminded me I have an insurance policy which is in my old name too, but I don't mind. If it helps (although appreciate it may not), I worked in a bank and it's very common so not change everything, insurances will still pay out as long it's your name you are using and it's not an insurance in Micky mouse say. In fact my car insurance is in married name and my licence is in maiden name and I claimed on my car insurance fine and even had to show my drivers licence.

Does your will list everything? to save having to close the insurance down and re-start, can you not have it in the will and list it under your old name, in the hope it will make it easier for your daughter? Just trying to think of ways round it for you.

Whenever I have moved, started a Sky account, or any bill really I have never had to prove my name. It may depend who you speak to - could you try calling at different times to get different shift managers?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I'm guessing the bank you worked for isn't the same one my life insurance is with :D (they bought out the company I took the policy out with originally).
I have specifically been advised that this is not the case with this particular bank.

I was told (by several different people at the bank) that the death certificate would need to be in the same name as the life insurance policy, otherwise the person making the claim (which would be my daughter) would need to provide "proof of the change of name". As they won't accept any of the documents I've already got (Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Decree Absolute, passport, driving licence, council tax and utility bills, bank and credit card statements) in order to change my name now, I can't see them accepting them from my daughter at the point they're facing a six figure payout.

I haven't had problems with any of the utility providers, my mobile provider just wanted to see the Decree Absolute and marriage certificate, which wasn't a problem.

I've spoken to several different managers on the phone and even been into the branch. I can provide (and have, in branch already provided) all the documents they would require to prove my ID to open a new account or take out a new policy, but apparently that's not good enough. Everyone I speak to agrees it's a ridiculous situation, but can't offer a solution - "computer says no" apparently.

Actually, thinking about all this again, I think the only way of resolving this might be a formal complaint...

  • Hello,

First post and this thread answers one of my questions. We're in the REALLY early stages of seperation (haven't told the kids or even managed to move out) but I am keen to revert back to my maiden name quite quickly (I love my kids and will miss sharing their surname but my maiden name had a far better provenance....!!)

Those who have done it for 'free' what was the process?! There's a thing on the GOV. UK page about making your own deed poll - is that what I'm looking for? I KNOW there's lots of you saying you can just use your Maiden name at any point but let's be realistic, banks and shizz don't just take your word for it, do they?!

The PayPal thing made me laugh as they were the ONLY ones who wouldn't accept any documents I sent them when we got married 6 years ago so at least there's one which I don't have to faff about with!

I mainly used my own name whilst married and my husband's name for a couple of things - I just carried on doing the same thing after he died with no problems.

And yes "go wth the flow" could be the story of my life.:)

    Hello,

I am trying to change my surname through gov.uk forms, but this is so confusing for such a simple process.
Did anyone have any experience and can help with those questions?

    LOC020
Whenever it asks me, is it my full name, i.e. first & last names, I need to enter everywhere? And then on top of the page 2 of the form there are tickboxes, do I assume right they all need to have "Surname" checked with my full name written in both boxes?

    LOC021
I do not know anyone who owes a property as I live in London :) Is this anyhow required to make the deed poll official? I appreciate the deed poll can be written on any piece of paper by hand, but some companies and organisation may require it to be confirmed by court and be the Gazette be notified.

Would just LOC020 be enough to change the names in my passport and bank, to begin with?

    Thank you :)
