Do I need new rear tyres?

Hello all

I hope you can help me!

I have 4 x 215/45R16 90V Bridgestone Turanza T001's on my 2015 Audi A1, which has done just over 22,000 miles.

The front tyres are approaching the legal minimum, so I am looking at getting these replaced within the next week or two.

The rear tyres, on the other hand, have 5.5 mm of tread left, however, as you can see from the attached photos, ever since I have owned the car (bought used nearly 2 years ago), there have been cracks visible in the grooves.

Photos - please copy and paste into your address bar:

Would it be wise to replace the rear tyres too?

Kind regards

Alex

I wouldn't renew them, I'd get them swapped to the front & get the 2 new ones on the rear.

IMO if they are wearing evenly then I wouldn't bother. Might even be worth getting your wheels swooped round front to back, have the new tyres in the back and wear those out on the front and get some new ones after that.

I like to rotate tyres round each year to even out wear.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Please could I direct your attention to the photos of the cracks - are these acceptable/safe?

    Cheers

How old are the tyres. Have a look for a 4 digit code which will show the week/year of manufacturer. Unless they're really old I wouldn't bother changing them. It'll only be a worry if you start to see cracks on the sidewall itself.

No they look fine to me, I had to replace 2 back tyres on my i10 years ago due to the same problem (it failed the MOT because of them) but mine were cracking on the side walls and were much more advanced.

Personally since your Audi is front wheel drive I'd put the new ones on the front since that's where all the stress is going.

And then you get lift off oversteer. Best tread to the back, there's no weight over it so it needs all the help it can get.

That's not good, but it doesn't look much more than cosmetic. I wouldn't be worrying yet, but I'd be keeping an eye on them.

Put the old tyres on the front and the new on the back. Have you been running with the tyres underinflated to cause the cracks?
Even if you have TPMS it is worth checking your pressures on a regular basis, if you are unsure how ask someone to show you.
