What car dealerships accept credit card payments?

It's not really viable to extrapolate a generalisation from a sample size of two, even if both purchases were after 2018! The 2018 banning of surcharges that triggered this thread meant that, while it may be "much more practical and comfortable than cash" from the consumer perspective, it's merchants who are effectively expected to absorb the cost of that convenience, and those selling big-ticket items, such as cars in particular, are naturally reluctant to swallow hundreds of pounds of cost if it can be avoided, so (anecdotally) many will only accept credit card payments for deposits rather than the full purchase price.samharris50 said:Talking about the topic... Almost all the dealerships accept a credit card. I have bought my cars from dealerships twice and I paid with my credit card both times. It's much more practical and comfortable than cash.
The bottom line remains that customers wanting to pay by card will need to ascertain the specific dealer's position on this, so either way round it doesn't really achieve anything to generalise....2 -
The last 4 cars I have bought dealers have taken credit cards. In fact they want deposit by a credit card...samharris50 said:Spam detected

But only for the deposit. The rest has to be via debit card or bank transfer.Life in the slow lane2 -
Thanks for the information. I'm not such a pro in these cases

They'll generally let you pay a deposit by card but the fees they get from the card processor and the card issuer will eat into profits so any balance of the payment will almost certainly be requested by cash (as in, debit, BACS)0

When we bought our car from the Eden Group they were happy for us to pay by credit card for the vehicle. However we declined.Unicorn_cottage said:Hi all
I need to buy a car having just secured a new job.
Does anyone have any idea if dealerships accept credit card payments up to say £3000?
Thanks

This - always this for me, and I've noticed that dealers are generally interested in how you intend to pay before they really get into negotiating on price. Frankly if a dealer would take a card payment for the full cost, I'd be worried I hadn't haggled hard enough!born_again said:

Last car I bought, I found I got the best deal if I took the dealer's PCP package and then settled the PCP in full shortly afterwards. That' because they gave me a better price for taking the PCP.ratechaser said:This - always this for me, and I've noticed that dealers are generally interested in how you intend to pay before they really get into negotiating on price. Actually to be fair, yes, did the same thing in the end last time. And I can see that they are offering £4500 contribution on Discos again right now - they really must be desperate. The dealers don't care if you pay off after a month, it's centrally funded and they have got their commission!NameWithheld said:

To be fair, they do care, as the finance company claw back the commission if you repay early, normally within three months.ratechaser said:

They were very clear that I only needed to make one monthly payment and then was free to settle.Deleted_User said:

In fact, exact same thing with a Ford I bought many years ago...0
