Compensation missed connection separate ticket

On 19/1/18, I was due to travel from Edinburgh to Soch AER via Paris and Moscow SVO. My flight from Paris CGD to Moscow SVO AF 1844 was delayed by 2h 30 minutes, As a result I missed my connection (3rd flight) at 22.20 SU1130 from Moscow to Sochi AER. The flight was scheduled to arrive at 21.05 MSK but did not arrive until 22.58 MSK, This 3rd flight was booked on a separate ticket, but my baggage and boarding card were checked through to Sochi AEO.
I bought a new ticket and paid for it myself and a hotel overnight to the cost of 16433.00 and 3750 rubles respectively. I then took flight SU1138 from Moscow SVO to Sochi AEO at 06.00 on 20/1/17. I was late for my conference
My travel insurance is refusing to pay as it was a non EU originating flight (small print in their T&Cs)
I have tried the Air France and Aviation Alternative Dispute resolution service. Any other suggestions as I am £600 out of pocket

Thanks in advance
H

Try to claim EU compensation for the late arrival into Moscow...

Attempting such a slender connection on two separate tickets was extremely foolish: your misfortune is far from surprising.

you ran a risk travelling with separate tickets...from the schedules you had 1hr 15mins for the "transfer" which was no-where near enough time....
had you booked the flights all on the same ticket - (which is possible for that routing although most combinations have longer in Moscow) you would potentially have had a claim based on arrival time in Sochi depending on the reason for the delay
According to flightaware you were delayed 1hr 53mins on arrival in Moscow so no EU261 applicable from AF
Generally I would want 4 hours+ or an overnight stay between separately ticketed flights as the risk is all your own.
