So completely relieved, dipsomaniac, thank you. I did not try to uninstall Chrome and when I followed your instructions above I was able to get into Chrome normally - the window has gone.
It gave me quite a scare as I thought I had somehow picked up a virus.
Your help has been invaluable and is much appreciated.
I don't know what I did to cause the 'window' in the first place. I think I was browsing on rail fares at the time.

I was getting that the other day , it was a pop up 3rd party advert in the Kent messenger web site .
I complained to them and they rapped the advertisers they use knuckles.
Are you sure it's popping up on all pages ?
You can download AVG for mobile from play store or malwarebytes and scan the phoneEx forum ambassador

all my data/media is all backed up several times so its not a issue and doesn't take long
I am replying to this from Chrome on my Moto G5 ' phone this time. Before your help I was scared to touch Chrome on it.
You have given a lot of time to help me and I'm very grateful, thank you again.

I'm not sure how it happened - I could not get past the 'window' as it seemed to be frozen and I did not click on it.
Was yours a virus/malware? I don't know what mine was and I am so grateful it's gone. At risk of sounding feeble, I am going to log off for now and have a rest - so relieved!
As I have benefited from help on this forum in the past it so much appreciated, thank you.

glad you got it sorted.
I am not a android expert but i don't think it can be classed as a virus just some code (3rd party code) built into the website you were visiting and couldn't affect any other apps on the phone."The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -
No such thing as virus for mobile phone - despite what the media and tin foil hatters will have you believe.
Do not install any AVG or any other snake oily rubbish on your device,
THEY CANNOT SCAN SYSTEM FILES - OR EVEN OTHER APPS - and are hence useless and will only slow down your device
What you encountered was a specially crafted advert that was presenting as an overlay.
Great advice from Dipso above - glad you got sorted0 -
