Sorry but that isn't my experience. My perfectly fine gas meter was "too old" & needed replacing (before smart meters). So the fitter very kindly left me with a gas leak. Before you suggest it - there was no meter fiddling going on either before or after. Just sheer incompetence on their part.
I ve never suggested that anyone on this forum is stealing energy.
Any meter fitter who neglects do to the gas pressure test after working on the system needs sacking ! its a serious mistake.

the people who are most in danger are the hundreds of thousands throughout the UK who are stealing gas and electric, and they are going to definitely refuse to have a smart meter fitted and they will make it difficult to even allow an exchange to a credit meter to be fitted.
They don`t want nosey meter fitters spotting the fiddled and damaged meters, usually on prepayment meters

There are other and probably more common reasons to decline.

The reason I've been disinterested so far in smart meters is that I've read that the earliest versions are not compatible with changing supplier.

I wouldn't trust a 'free safety check' by a smart meter installer to tell me anything I couldn't check for myself. (Zs 0.8 ohms at the kitchen sockets if anyone cares.)

And given the last time I had a meter change the fitter left the incoming phase tail dangling live in the air while he swapped the meter, without isolating or any PPE, I could probably do a safer job changing the meter as well.

And I wonder how many of the 'saved from potential tragedies' homes were ones that had undersized (but still functioning) main equipotential bonding or TT earthing without an RCD.

I don't see how these meters can 'save me money' given that they all have to be paid for and that, like solar panel subsidies, is all paid for through my bills. And as they're all going to stop working soon and have to be replaced with Mk II meters, and will probably end up in landfill, they're not environmentally friendly anyway.

I heard this rubbish on watchdog last night.

Also interesting about those who had a smart meter fitted by EDF for electric.

After just watching this on iPlayer, I am wondering what checks they do. My Scottish Power SM was fitted a year ago and am pretty sure they did not measure CO or do any other safety check.

They stated that EDF fitted some GE SGC 1312 electric smart meters which had a problem with the electrical terminals.

The work around was for installers to use a torque screwdriver to prevent them breaking, but the installers felt the torque was too low.

When terminals aren't tight you can get burning and smells typically when the hob / shower is on.

EDF provided a phone number for those concerned

They also kinda said, don't go touching the cables/meter as you will cause more problems, which is true
