Nearly 300,000 homes in the UK were saved from potential tragedies, including fires and gas leaks, after they had smart meters installed last year.
They allow consumers to track energy use in real time, helping them to cut bills and be more environmentally friendly. The devices also helped detect defective appliances, gas and carbon monoxide leaks, and faulty wiring in 270,000 homes in 2017

Apparently the world's energy is going to run out if we don't install them: "if we don't want our energy supplies to run out in the future; this is something everyone must do".0

So why is the Government so keen on electric vehicles? This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Interesting that someone who you would expect to be reasonably smart didn't have the sense to have a CO monitor!0

No doubt some reasonably smart people will die in future because they didn't fit a new CO alarm or replace the batteries in an old one because they mistakenly thought their new smart meter also had CO monitoring capability - based on misleading articles like this one.
I've also just learned that in the future I'll be able to set my 'smart' dishwasher to come on when electricity is cheapest... so I'm not sure what the flip it was doing coming on last night in E7 hours because it isn't supposed to be doing that yet. :wall:"In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -
Meter fitters have always spotted small gas leaks when they exchange meters, does nt matter if they re smart or dumb gas meters.
They always connect up and do pressure tests ( or they should do ! )after installing a new gas meter. thats what the nipple on the gas meter is used for.
I don t think newspapers are properly clued up on smart meters. The Telegraph are worse than the Mirror.
the people who are most in danger are the hundreds of thousands throughout the UK who are stealing gas and electric, and they are going to definitely refuse to have a smart meter fitted and they will make it difficult to even allow an exchange to a credit meter to be fitted.
They don`t want nosey meter fitters spotting the fiddled and damaged meters, usually on prepayment meters0 -

Sorry but that isn't my experience. My perfectly fine gas meter was "too old" & needed replacing (before smart meters). So the fitter very kindly left me with a gas leak. Before you suggest it - there was no meter fiddling going on either before or after. Just sheer incompetence on their part.0
