So if the most expensive supermarket merges with the cheapest... doesn't that just make them Tesco?
I don't find Sainsbury to be the most expensive supermarket. Before I shop I put my list into "mysupermarket.com" and Sainsbury often come out as the cheapest. Asda never does. It often is dearer than Tesco and even, occasionally, than Waitrose.
I always did my main shop in Sainsbury and then smaller shops in Tesco and Lidl. Don't see the attraction of Aldi. I can never seem to get what I want there and their fruit and veg are awful quality.
I have moved now and my nearest Sainsbury is quite a distance away. My nearest supermarkets are Morrisons and Asda. Morrisons is not bad and the Asda here seems to be a million times better than the one where I lived before. There fruit and veg is far better but most of their offers are on processed rubbish which I don't buyThe world is over 4 billion years old and yet you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie0 -

Recent BBC news
“Sainsbury's has confirmed plans to merge with Asda, which is currently owned by US supermarket giant Walmart.
The supermarkets said that grocery prices would fall in both chains as a result of the merger.
Sainsbury's chief executive Mike Coupe also said the deal would not lead to store closures or job losses in stores.
The combination of the UK's second and third largest supermarkets would create a giant, representing nearly £1 in every £3 spent on groceries.
Mr Coupe - who will lead the new combined group - said he believed the two supermarkets were "the best possible fit".”0 -
In 2014 Sainsburys did a deal with Netto parent co in Denmark to open stores in the UK to compete with ALDI and Lidl, this agreement ended in 2016, it appears this was not profitable and now we have promises of lower prices with a merger with Asda, this seems unlikely when they have tried to discount in the past.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Trouble is not so much the discount in price. The problem is in how you want to profit from selling the goods. Evidently the Netto didn't give them a bigger enough percentage.
The bigger question is why the supermarkets cannot follow the Aldi/Lidl business model. The more I live, the more I learn.
The more I learn, the more I grow.

How little I know.!!0 -
Well the publicity of the Boss of Sainsburys saying there will be no staff cuts is BS. My local Sainsburys is removing 15 tean leader jobs and replacing them with 5 jobs which all 15 have to compete for.

Aldi and Lidl have different business models. We have both about a mile apart, but Lidl don't appear as slick an operation as Aldi and their product range is confused.0
