  • Aldi, Sainsburys and Asda are almost next door to each other very close to me. I often start off in Aldi and then go to one of the other two to finish off my shopping. I try to avoid going to all three but I do save by buying alot in Aldi first and then just getting the bits Aldi don't have in one of the other two. Shame if one of them closes.

This could trigger Amazon to bid for Sainsburys, the customer base is complementary plus Amazon can then offer collections through the Argos counters in Sainsburys, break into financial services via Sainburys Bank and use Sainsbury instead of Morrisons for Prime Now.

I only have a Tesco, Waitrose and Lidl close by. Too far for me to travel to the nearest Sainsbury's, ASDA or Aldi.

According to press reports Asda and Sainsbury will retain their identities. So we won't be seeing Sainsda or Asbury

Shame, I was just thinking the combined colour scheme would remind me of my favourite Tic Tac packs every time I went shopping. :(

We live in a small market town that has 2 supermarkets, Waitrose and Sainsburys. You can’t move in the Waitrose and car park is nearly always full. Haven’t been in the Sainsburys much (we’ve only lived there 6 weeks so still plenty of time;)).

Nearest Aldi about 20 miles away and Lidl, Tesco, Morrisons in the next town about 5 miles. They are, according to popular rumour, building an Aldi and a Sainsburys there as well. Should be interesting.

Sainsburys have a few IT jobs going, so they may have been making plans.

As for Asda, going into a store is like going back to the 70s and once you've done your shopping you might get back to your car to find you've got a parking ticket.

    I'm close to a Sainsbobs

Hopefully they'll keep the new name short as many seem to struggle with the existing one.

    Maybe AssBugs or AssBogs

I can't remember the last time I was in a Sainsburys....it must be around ten years ago....There isn't one near enough for me to go to.

There IS an Asda nearer to us...I went there a couple of years or so ago...I wasn't that impressed by the quality of the fresh fruit and veg...and the overall store was nothing special....Getting there means a twenty minute walk to a bus stop, or a taxi-journey...so I haven't bothered to go again.

So, in the most direct way, the merger will not affect me.

However, I would love to see them open a new supermarket in our town centre.....we currently have a small Tesco and an M&S FoodHall...some competition for Tesco would be good!...So I am hoping the merger might involve some new smaller town-centre stores being proposed!

I do suspect that for a number of reasons, which will be reported as 'unfortunate but inevitable' and which will 'ultimately be for the benefit of our customers'...the prices will rise.

aldi/lidl for most good prices but limited variety
Tesco getting pricy and a !!!!!! on there stock rotation
Asda - good prices, good range
Sainsburys - thinks it is Waitrose with the prices on a lot of things but thier quality does not match
Waistrose - good quality food, can even get seafood on their essentials range, decent offers, can be pricy, but Sainsburys often charge more than they do!

That is my opinion . Only go into Sainsburys when collecting something from Argos, Do a shop online with Ocado as basically a waitrose brand and get ocado brands and rest mostly at aldi's or lidls with odd trip to tesco's for one their own brand items. Asdas once in a blue moon after they managed to drop most of my shopping into the canal!
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.
