Makes more sense sains buying Asda than Walmart buying saints. I thought sains might be bought by us target or even Amazon or perhaps one of the European biggies like Carrefour or migroes.
    I think....

Aldi is making all the main players nervous, buying up competition isn't the way forward, this Asda/Sainsbury merger will be paid for by the customer...

What's the problem? Isn't the underlying issue that the sector has now been disrupted by Lidl, Aldi et al, the incumbents are struggling and thus as in any industry, consolidation occurs? New entrants have erm..entered, old ones die away. Similar has been happening in the airline sector.
  • Our local store is Sainsbob's, and we have no Asda in town although a huge ASDA distribution warehouse nearby. I don't have a car, so limited although can get bus to Aldi / Lidl / Morrison's / Tesco if need be.

Sainsbob's definitely more expensive for a lot (but not everything).
I hope they rename one of our two Sainsbob's to ASDA.

I don't particularly like Sainsburys or Asda.
No reason to think I'll like their offspring.

Couldn't agree more! We have an Asda nearby and a Sainsbury's quite close too. I use the Asda about once a month for a few small items I can't get in Aldi. I never use Sainsbury's as not only are they more expensive, their own brand quality is the worst of any of the supermarkets by a long way.

In Asda you can sometimes see their daily figures sheet on an unmanned till. I always look at the daily take compared to the same day last year, and it is clear their sales are falling from those. They are no longer competitive and always seem to have lots of staff stood around nattering.

I suspect Sainsbury's are also struggling, people tell me the local stores are usually almost empty. They would not be missed as far as I can see, and a merger would probably see many stores close.

According to press reports Asda and Sainsbury will retain their identities. So we won't be seeing Sainsda or Asbury

Sounds like a nice bar of Novichok ;)
  • A further announcement will be made at 7 am on Monday just before the markets open which suggest the deal is all but done and that Sainsbury are taking over Asda.
The competition authority will have little option and having allowed Tesco to take over Booker will have to allow this move but they may impose conditions which will probably involve stores being closed (which will happen anyway), my guess is 100's of stores will go with perhaps 10,000+ jobs gone.
Sains took over Argos/Habitat 2 years ago and have so far closed 160 Argos stores.
The plan is that both trading names will stay as they have different customer bases, but as they will become the biggest retailer with a 32% share (Tesco has 28%) their buying power will be immense, and of course back office savings will be made and jobs lost.

To sum it up this isn't good news for anyone, other than walmart who will trouser billions.

I know a large Sainsbury's and a large Asda in the same shopping mall! :D
    This could get interesting!
Might be worth getting in some popcorn! :D

 Just thought! Sainsbury's had better not change their caramel panna cottas! No-one else's is as nice, even though they look the same.
They've already stopped stocking quite a few things I used to get regularly; if the panna cottas change, I might give up on them altogether!

I'll have to spend my nectar points!

I used to like Asda's banana bread beer. However, it's one of the most manic places to shop in, so I hardly ever go.
