Just to let you know, the Trafford Centre is not an outlet mall, it's a regular mall. But it is easily accessible by bus or tram-then-bus from central Manchester.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

I don't know if you'd find Luther King House to your taste? It's comfortable, and I think you'd find it friendly. Not high end, our room was ready for refurbishment.
Thank you very much. I have followed the helpful link you gave and it definitely looks as if it woulc be really good - and much easier for a single person than a large hotel.
I would never have found such a place and I'll definitely be keeping the link and information.
Much appreciated, thank you.

That is really good to know, thank you - and I must say that a ride on the tram is also very appealing as part of a short trip. It would be another wee extra to enjoy on a short break.
I have not had time to search properly yet and wonder if Cheshire Oaks would also be possible to reach by public transport from Manchester. I am interested in the link for accommodation given by Savvy Sue, above. A coach tour would be ideal but the timing in November and December is a bit out for me.
I was a student for one year in Manchester in the 1970's. I've never been back and would like to visit again.
Many thanks.

It doesn;t look easy - although it says there are National express coaches from Manchester to Cheshire Oaks, the timetable suggests that there is only one a day in each direction, going the opposite way that you'd want (Oaks to Manchester in the morning and the other way in the evening)

The only other option may be to find a coach company doing day trips0 -

That is perfect, p00hsticks, thank you. Will definitely keep the link and use it for my visit to Manchester.
I now have a list of things to do on my short trip - and looking forward to being in Manchester again so many years after my student days there.
Once again - I am really appreciative of all these helpful replies and the links.
