Lost all photos etc

If the photos had been in Google photos and you had a Google account, you could have recovered them with Google backup and Sync from another device. Hindsight, I know, but all my pic's are in Google now, available from my phone and tablet.
It's a lesson that is only learned when something like this happens: buy some form of backup, an external hard drive for example, and schedule backups for when the PC can be left on.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
