Does it effect your credit score if you pay off bulk of monthly bill leaving a minimum direct debit payment ? for example if the bill is £210 and i pay £200 by debit card and pay the £10 left by direct debit

Or is it in my interest to let the complete balance be paid by direct debit at monthly bill ? For example if the bill is £210 and i pay £210 direct debit on the month end?

It makes no difference as long as the full statement balance is received by the due date.

PS: I am assuming that you are talking about a credit card.

Why are you concerned about something that is only seen by you ?

    Thank you for kindly responding
Yes I am talking about a Credit Card
  • Yes so long as it’s done after receiving the statement balance

Some Credit Cards will adjust or cancel the DD if a payment is received before the DD goes out for collection on the specified date (about 5 working days before the 'payment-due date). Other cards do take the DD regardless of any additional payments.

Check with your card how they operate.

I have a Tesco clubcard credit card already. My Santander 123 account was losing one of its 2 direct debits from Tesco savings account. Tesco savers are stopping use of direct debits to save.
So I opened a john Lewis card. I have always paid the Tesco CC off but left a few quid to initiate the DD and planned to do the same with the John Lewis. Tesco always take by DD the balance left after i make a part payment to pay in full.
I will check if John Lewis do the same.

comparing the cards on the admin side. I prefer the Tesco system. that allows me to create my own alerts and I can change direct debits online.

John Lewis CC i have to post in a direct debit mandate. both are ok so far and difference is swings and roundabouts

The way you are conducting this account makes very little sense. Set up a full balance direct debit and let the balance be taken by direct debit each month.

Yes you are correct I have to admit. Its in recent months that i have started to move from using debit to credit cards. This was partly due to a friend making a successful section 75 claim which included consequential loss. Also seeing the frank abegnale you tube video and of course i know usa rules are different. I have a concern when i see an amount i owe. You are right so I'm going to bite the bullet and let the full balance be taken each month. Thank you Ben8282

I would add that there are two valid reasons for you to pay the credit card in the manner that you have been doing, neither of which have anything to do with credit scores.
The first would be to reduce interest which does not apply to you as you pay in full each month.
The second would be to reduce the balance to allow you to keep spending on the card if you have a low credit limit.
