Flying with Refridgerated Medication (Liquid)

Good Morning Everyone
Does anyone have any tips or advise about flying, and clearing security, with medication that has to be kept refrigerated, as we're due to fly shortly.
I have been prescribed some eye-drops (in a small 5ml) bottle, that need to be kept in the fridge. Obviously this is small enough to pass security with no problem, but I was thinking of transporting it in a small flask, with iced-water inside. Obviously I won't be able to take this through security.
My plan was to pour the excess water away, just before security, and then go straight to an airport bar, and ask for some more ice/water. Same on the plane, if the ice needs topping up.
Our hotel has a fridge when we get there so that isn't a problem,
Any other tips, or problems I haven't thought of??
Many thanks

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)

Get something designed for the job like this- http://mediworld.co.uk/medinsuline-cool-bag.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjw8YXXBRDXARIsAMzsQuX2sNfvJot9RFB1RiX9ZeOH_rG9OqiAPpnq3cJ5fj7Q1MsOfEZnSKAaAkkWEALw_wcB0

That looks good Jim. Amazon do similar things too i see. Seems a bit expensive for what is basically a ice-pack and a case. And i wouldn't have the facility to re-freeze the packs for the return journey.
Would an airport be happy with the gel ice packs at security. they could technically be liquid and maybe over 100ml?
I don't really have time to order something, so i was hoping my plan would work (at least for this time)
Does iced water stay at approx 5 degrees, if kept topped with with ice, and well insulated? How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)0 -
Have you tried contacting the airline to see what they suggest? What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

I would do it this way - take the flask with contents intact and an empty bottle to pour the water/ice into for disposal if necessary. Declare it to the security staff member overseeing preparation for scan. There are exceptions made sometimes where medicine is involved and they may let it pass, otherwise decant into the spare bottle for disposal and put the eyedrops into your liquids bag, then proceed as planned.
With the ice it's probably below 5° and I doubt you need to top-up during the flight if it's not too long and the flask is a decent one.Evolution, not revolution0 -
Is the medicine prescribed best check its ok to take into the country your travelling to, probably ok as just eye drops but thought I would ask as some destinations can be a bit funny about medicines (UAE)
When I had to fly with medication that needed to be refrigerated I asked the crew to store for me and they had no problem with that, I also had a letter from the doctor advising what the medication was for just to be on the safe side, never needed to show it.0 -
It's just a 2 hour flight to Spain, nowhere too exotic. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)0

Just on the off chance that your eye drops are Latanoprost (which I use), these only have to be kept refrigerated prior to the first time the bottle is opened. After that, they just need to be kept below 25c and discarded after a month.
Even if they aren't, just double check the storage instructions in case they are similar.0 -
Do they have eye drops in Spain ?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Just by way of an update, now we're back. Saw the consultant just before we went away, and he said no need to carry on with those drops, while away. Crisis averted. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)0
