I still allow my children to play conkers games, the traditional way. No eyewear, no nothing. Same as many other games that H&S people have a heart attack over these days.
I work in a school and am sick to death of Health and safety this and health and safety that. It didn't do us any harm when we were young and the generation before that.
I like to let my children live and have fun. If they hurt themselves then they know not to do it again. It's called Learning life. It's how they learn, and it's how we learnt also. Most importantly they have fun, it's free and they are not stuck inside all day, they are not stuck in front of a computer game or tv and they are getting fresh air.
My daughters love collecting conkers, pinecones etc for their toy squirrels and make houses etc with them. last year they got bluetack and stuck them together to make a house etc for them.
Basically give my girls a tray full of conkers etc and leave them to it, the things they imagine/make etc provide hours of fun, they are learning and just being children.
I do take some conkers though and place them around the house for the spiders though lolPay all debt off by Christmas 2025 £815.45/£3,000£1 a day challenge 2025 - £180/£730 Declutter a bag a week in 2025 11/52Lose 25lb - 10/25lbs Read 1 book per week - 5/52Pay off credit card debt 18%/100%0 -
Ah I remember one year my boys collecting a carrier bag full of conkers then spending hours loading and dumping them with their toy trucks and diggers. They are teenagers now so those days are well and truly over!
And I had completely forgotten fairy furniture made out of conkers!!0 -

I had forgotten about making fairy furniture out of conkers - I used to have hours of fun doing that (I even think that there are some really old bits of conker furniture in the dolls house which is in my parents' loft).
Usually I get conkers and lob them into the corners of cupboards and on windowsills where spiders come in. I have even started putting them in the shed.
Yesterday I wandered over to the park for my Tai Chi class and found a nice shiny one on the ground which I picked up and popped in my pocket. On my way home I had a wander amongst the trees and picked up a fair few which are now being soaked in a mixture of glycerine and water because I want to preserve their shine (some are still in their cases) and these will be used in a window display for our local light festival (I can't be having non-shiny conkers in it - they need to gleam).
I might be in my 50's but I still love going out with a carrier bag to collect conkers and kick up the leaves as I go. Last year my neighbour told me that I was too old for conkers - I said that you can never be too old for conkers (maybe if he looked for conkers then he would be less of an angry man).0
