BT Pole on my land

Hello all, just after any advice you lot might have - On my newly bought empty land is a BT telegraph pole with about 9 wires off the top of it. I have full planning consent to build a detached house on the land but things would be much easier if it could be moved about 6 feet forward onto the pavement. I'm not sure how long the pole has been there but when I wandered around it before I bought it a local BT engineer who was close by said it needed replacing soon.
I have just contacted BT via their website to ask for them to provide me with proof of wayleave access for the pole as I can't find anything in the land documents that came with the sale. Any further thoughts ? If I have to pay BT to move it any idea of cost ?
Ta and be gentle as my first post here too :)

It won't be BT you need to contact, but Openreach as they own and maintain the telephone infrastructure.

It Open Reach you need to deal with. Unfortunately (and ironic as they are a communications company) they can be hard to contact and deal with.

You will need to talk to them about getting a phone connection for the new house, so use that opportunity when the surveyor comes round to discuss moving the pole.
  • Going back to the days when I worked for them and later for a company that used them as a supplier, Openreach may also charge you for the survey. So be prepared, and best wishes - a couple of years ago, from memory they used to charge us £400 - £500 if we wanted a survey done.
  • Yes sorry I meant OpenReach - just spoke to them after an hour wait to get a human !! Yes they will charge me nearly 300 for a surveyor to come out within 25 working days and discuss.....possibilities....

I also emailed the people she suggested to discuss where there was a way leave agreement and she said I would have to WRITE to their pole disagreement people as well if I didn't like their answer, write - god what century do we live in. Seems ridiculous that in this day and age she couldnt tell me then and there whether the agreement existed.

They have a whole department dedicated to disagreements?

I guess a lot of people must have pole problems.

It is rare for a BT pole to be on private land - they generally at the back edge of footpath.

    Has the boundary moved ?

Like I said, you will need new connection for the house you are building. OR will NOT charge you for a survey for that. They will even free issue to you all the cable and ducting you need.

When you have him out for THAT survey mention the moving of the pole issue.

They are a terribly bureaucratic organisatioin, but once you actually make contact with one of the workers, things get a whole lot easier.
  • That’s a great idea - how would I get that ball rolling ?
