    Get stopped more than once and the police can order for the car to be re-registered back to a normal plate.

    The DVLA are very specific about layout, fonts, spacing, etc....down to the last mm. So definitely not a grey area. It's just a matter of whether the police notice it, and decide to do something about it.
    i agree with the others here though...you do run a risk. And changing the spacing is very noticeable.

    I'd go for something that doesn't need to be messed about with (although that's likely to be more expensive).
