It's illegal. You can be stopped by the police and fined.

The DVLA ask that if you plan to jig it around that you simply don't buy it.
I think one of the mums at school just got done because hers is now the way it should be.
I have one and my sister in law has one and we leave ours alone. If the plate is good enough then you will see what it should say
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

She might not have got done, she might have got an MOT - I believe they fail the MOT if the number plate is incorrect so you have to change them back!
One of my old bosses drove around with his altered - never got any trouble and he used to drive to Birmingham from Essex every weekend. The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0 -
This is such a grey area for the Police. If you're lucky, you'll never be stopped. I was stopped yesterday for my number plate on the M62. Have been driving around with it for 6 years, and never had a problem. Was given a £30 fine, but no mention to have it changed.
I would be cautious to move characters from one "group" to another though, and don't go for italics or anything fancy like that. Keep it visible and not confusing to someone, and you should be fine!0 -
Some people never get caught. Some do. Its if the Police Officer can be bothered at said time...!
Though, if you alter it, it's illigal, then it's not roadworthy and you could be done on the grounds that it would fail an MOT.0 -

I don't believe it is. The law is stated on the other thread you posted on regarding spacing and font. If you try to misrepresent your number plate, you can be fined. ANPR technology needs to be able to read it.I would be cautious to move characters from one "group" to another though, and don't go for italics or anything fancy like that. I agree as has been mentioned, this is a fairly trivial matter in comparison to some other road offences. It does not make it fine though. Police are now pulling people up on this, whereas previously they'd have turned a blind eye.0 -

I'm at a bit of a loss to know why you would want to?Stompa0 -
If you alter the plate in any way it is illegal for road use, and you could get stopped and given a £30 fine. And they might use this "as an excuse" to pull you over.
It's not a grey area. It's either legal or illegal.0 -

It's nothing to do with roadworthiness. How does having a different bit of plastic on the front or back of the vehicle make it unroadworthy? It doesn't.
You could be "done" for not complying with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. No other reason.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
i thought it would look better if i rejigged the letters but if theres a chance im going to get stopped and fined and if its illegal im not going to bother.
Thanks for all the advice0
