You own them, you dispose of them.0

Whose responsibility do you think it should be?Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

I told the guy who I bought the garage from that I didn't want them, this was before I took the garage down, the sheets are roughly 8ft in length and are currently stacked in the guys garden,
I phoned the local tip just for some advice and the lady said they will need to be double wrapped in visqueen which isn't cheap and also if I was to get pulled by police etc I could get fined for not having a waste carrying licence?

If it's own waste then you are legally entitled to transport it to the tip or recycling centre with no licence required.0 -
asbestos needs to be removed by licensced contractor. We've just moved into a house with a garage with asbestos roof - we knew before purchase of this. We have been quoted 2.5K for removal when we need it.0

If you are working in your own property or helping someone else in their property and you are not getting paid for the work then it's perfectly acceptable and legal to remove it and take it to a licenced facility (such as a council run tip or recycling centre) provided that you follow the requirements concerning the quantities allowed and how they are wrapped up.0 -

Transporting and disposing of the former garage owner's waste asbestos for him could be a problem.
IIRC the key phrase is 'for reward' which covers situations other than being directly paid for the service - and arguably the OP has obtained 'reward' in the form of a discount on the cost of buying the garage if he disposes of the asbestos.
It isn't a straightforward case."In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -

helpful to know, i wouldn't want to risk it myself personally.0 -
Transporting asbestos waste is quite dangerous & risky especially if you don't have the right equipment. We put our trust in our local supplier since they were able to just dispose of the waste for us. Within half an hour they removed the asbestos sheets left over from our garage and it was done!
Like you, I wouldn't have wanted to risk it personally! After hearing about how asbestos fibres can be inhaled through the lining of your lungs, I put my safety first and just had it removed!0
